Review by Charles "Dutch" Metzker

Howard Mahan is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter originally from Fredonia, Kansas and now based out of Lawrence, Kansas. Howard started playing guitar in a family band at age 9 and hasn’t stopped since. “Howard Mahan & Friends” has been together as a concept since 2016 with various line ups, playing every bar, club, and festival in the area, especially in the post-pandemic era. The band has recorded three all-original albums since 2020, creating a sound that spans blues and rock roots, jam music, Americana, and more. Howard also plays solo acoustic shows, duo shows with various artists, and plays guitar with other groups.

…Time to Go (EP) is the first solo release by Howard Mahan. Released in 2020, it features Kansas City musicians Adam Hagerman (drums) and Jacque Garoutte (bass, vocals) from the band Levee Town; thus, the subtitle of the release.

All songs written by Howard Mahan and Jacque Garoutte.

front cover of time to go by guitarist Howard Mahan

Track 1: This Is It – I’m calling you on the phone are you there? Hot guitar licks. This is the cut that you may have heard on a radio broadcast. 5:14

Track 2: Keep Using Me – I can hear footsteps and see the writing on the wall, let me go, and ask no questions. 4:20

Track 3: What Are We Fighting For – This one rocks out pretty hard: You got a gun to my head (Yikes). 4:03

Track 4: Shadow of the Sun – A much more mellow song – Running a race that can’t be won, chasing a dream that’s already gone. This song appears regularly in Howard’s live shows. 6:52

Track 5: Good Day – Leaving all the bad behind, let it go now, let the world pass on by. 4:04
