This is the first of three articles introducing the artists performing at Blues in the Bottoms!
Lightnin Malcolm is a cutting-edge Mississippi bluesman who fuses delta blues and soul music with his unique bass, rhythm, and lead guitar style. Malcolm is a guitar slinger with a deep soulful voice that produces irresistible blues grooves. Malcolm learned his craft directly from touring with blues masters such as the legendary R.L. Burnside, T Model Ford, Big Jack Johnson, and Robert Belfour. He’s appeared on world stages with Robert Plant, Jimmy Buffett, Robert Cray, the Black Keys, Big Head Todd, the North Mississippi Allstars, and Gary Clark, Jr. The influence of these masters has allowed him to develop a uniquely funky and hypnotic bass/rhythm/lead simultaneous “full band” guitar sound.
In 2009, Malcolm won a Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Blues Artist.
When not on the road, Malcolm is home playing in juke joints across the south where the music feels most comfortable. Whether playing in a backcountry juke joint, an urban nightclub or an international concert venue, Malcolm is clearly the “Real Deal” and his deep soulfulness comes shining through.
Malcolm has released a string of critically acclaimed albums for Mississippi Indie label Shakedown Records while playing hundreds of live shows worldwide. Learn more about Lightnin Malcolm on his official website.
